Dear Students,
After a long and exhausting process, you have successfully passed the exams conducted by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) and earned the right to become students at our university. According to regulations, all students who have newly registered in the undergraduate programs of Gazi University that offer education in foreign languages (either partially or fully) or those who were unsuccessful in the previous academic term must take the Foreign Language Proficiency (Exemption) Exam at the beginning of the new academic year, prepared and administered by the College of Foreign Languages. Students who pass this exam will be exempt from the Foreign Language Preparatory Program and can begin their academic activities in their respective departments. Those who do not participate in the exam or fail to pass will be required to follow the foreign language preparatory program, even if they are entitled to receive education in their enrolled program.
1. The classrooms of the exams for all students will be announced on the website http://ydyo.gazi.edu.tr. Please follow the announcements carefully.
2. The exemption exam consists of two stages. The first stage will be held on October 21, 2024. For students who pass the first stage, the second stage will be held on October 21, 2024.
3. The first stage of the exemption exam (October 21, 2024) will begin at 09:30 for students taking the exam in English, German, Arabic, and French.
4. The second stage (October 21, 2024) will begin at 14:00 for students taking the exam in English, German, Arabic, and French.
5. Students who fail the exemption exam will continue in the English Preparatory Program and take the Placement Test on October 22, 2024, which will begin at 09:30. Based on the results of this exam, students will be placed into classes appropriate to their level.
6. Students who start their courses in the B1 group as a result of the Placement Test will be eligible to take the End-of-Term Exam (Final) at the end of the Fall Semester. Those who pass this exam will be considered to have successfully completed the preparatory education. Students who fail this exam will continue their preparatory education in the Spring Semester.
INFORMATION ABOUT THE PREPARATORY EXEMPTION (FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY) EXAM
(For Students of Gazi Faculty of Education, Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine)
1. All exams will be conducted in person at Gazi University's Gölbaşı Campus. (Information about the classrooms where the first and second stages of the exam will take place can be found on the website http://ydyo.gazi.edu.tr.)
2. The first stage of the exam consists of Reading and Listening sections in all languages. The details for the English exam are as follows:
· Reading Comprehension: This section consists of 55 questions: 10 questions filling in the blanks according to the text (cloze test), 5 questions choosing the best option to complete the given sentence, 5 questions choosing the best option to complete the given paragraph, 5 questions finding the irrelevant sentence in a paragraph, and 30 questions answering questions according to the text.
· Listening Comprehension: This section consists of 25 questions: 5 questions based on different short conversations, 1 dialogue/conversation with 5 questions, and 3 long talks with 5 questions each.
· Each question is worth 1.25 points.
3. Students who score 59.5 or higher in the first stage will be eligible to take the second stage of the exam. Students enrolled in the English Language Teaching and Arabic Language Teaching programs must score 84.5 or higher in both stages to pass the Preparatory Exemption (Foreign Language Proficiency) Exam.
4. The second stage of the exam consists of Writing and Speaking sections in all languages. Each section is worth 50 points. The details for the English exam are as follows: · Written Production: Writing an essay expressing opinions on a given topic (word limit: 250-350 words).
· Spoken Production: The speaking section will be conducted in a question-and-answer format between a lecturer and a student.
5. Students who score 59.5 or higher in this stage (except for those enrolled in the English Language Teaching and Arabic Language Teaching programs) will be considered successful and can begin their studies in their faculties. Students in the English Language Teaching and Arabic Language Teaching programs must score 84.5 or higher in both stages to pass the Preparatory Exemption (Foreign Language Proficiency) Exam.
6. When coming to the exam, you must bring a photo ID (identity card, passport, driver's license, etc.) and a student ID or the student certificate you received during registration.
7. Students who have transferred to Gazi University's undergraduate programs with a compulsory Foreign Language Preparatory Class from another higher education institution, either domestically or abroad, must pass the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam administered by Gazi University College of Foreign Languages, regardless of whether they have previously received Foreign Language Preparatory Education.
